IP Addresses and Networking
Updated 2 July 2026
Every server on the internet has an IP address. Your website's A record connects your domain to that address. Shared hosting often uses one IP for many sites; dedicated or cloud hosting may give you a static IP.
This article explains where IP addresses matter in WordPress hosting, including DNS changes, access whitelisting, and network security setup.
When IPs matter
- Pointing a domain to new hosting after a migration.
- Whitelisting your IP for SSH or database remote access.
- Configuring a CDN or firewall to only allow trusted traffic.
