Creating & Downloading Backups

Updated 1 September 2026

The Backups dashboard lists completed restore points and their downloadable parts. Shield Pro can also queue an on-demand backup before a risky change, release or campaign. Read Backups Overview for schedules, storage and retention details.

Create an on-demand backup

  1. Select the Shield Pro site in the workspace selector.
  2. Confirm that the WordPress plugin is connected.
  3. Open Backups and choose Create backup.
  4. Wait while the request is queued, WordPress prepares the data and the off-site upload completes.
  5. Refresh or watch the page until the new backup appears as completed.

Only one backup or restore operation can run safely at a time. The create action is unavailable while another operation is active or when subscription payment needs attention.

Download a backup

  1. Find the completed backup in Backup history.
  2. Choose the full archive, database-only download or files-only download offered for that backup.
  3. Store the downloaded copy securely because it can contain site code, configuration and personal data.

Choose the right download

  • Full: use when you need the complete available restore point.
  • Database: use for content, settings and other data stored in WordPress tables.
  • Files: use for plugins, themes, uploads and other backed-up filesystem content.

Protect downloaded archives

Do not place a backup in a public web folder or send it through an unsecured channel. Delete local copies when they are no longer needed and follow your organisation’s data-retention rules.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

The customer dashboard offers manual backups for an active Shield Pro site with a connected plugin.

Can I create a backup while a restore is running?

No. Wait for the active backup or restore operation to finish.

Why is the Create backup button unavailable?

Check the plan, plugin connection, subscription payment state and whether another backup or restore is already active.

Yes. They may contain site configuration, code and personal data, so store and transfer them securely.
